About this tool

Computes spindle RPM, feed rate, and material removal rate from a surface speed and chip load, for a chosen material and cutter.

Inputs
  • Material and tool type
  • Tool diameter and flute count
  • Surface speed (SFM / m/min) and chip load per tooth
  • Depth and width of cut for MRR
Assumptions
  • Rigid setup, sharp tooling, and flood or through-tool coolant where the table implies it
  • Chip loads reflect conventional (not high-efficiency or trochoidal) milling
  • Table values are conservative catalog starting points, not optimized parameters
Sources
  • Published carbide and HSS tooling catalogs
  • Machinery's Handbook speed and feed tables
Valid range
  • Tool diameters 1/32–2 in (1–50 mm); common steels, stainless, aluminum, titanium, plastics.
Limitations
  • Does not account for machine horsepower, torque curve, or spindle-speed limits
  • No deflection, chatter, or tool-life modeling
  • Exotic alloys and hardened steels above ~45 HRC are not covered

Values are starting points for planning — verify against your tooling and machine documentation before cutting. Report an issue with this tool →

Values are starting points. Adjust based on machine rigidity, tool quality, and coolant.
